# 700 Jobs at Risk at Vienna General Hospital

October 16, 2026 at 10:09 AM

> A planned university austerity package threatens 700 positions and 24-hour operations at the Vienna General Hospital due to budget cuts.

A planned university austerity package could eliminate up to 700 positions at the **Vienna General Hospital**. The potential job cuts include 200 medical roles and 500 administrative and preclinical positions as budget negotiations for 2028 to 2030 continue.

The works council warns that a proposed 15.5 billion euro budget, down from 16.5 billion, forces universities to cover 100 million euros in annual salaries. Accounting for inflation, the **Medical University of Vienna** faces a 14 percent budget reduction.

These cuts threaten 24-hour operations and could close entire departments. As the hospital provides one-third of **Vienna**'s medical care, the council warns that insufficient funding will legally terminate agreements for essential night and weekend services.
