# Austria Approves Two-Month Fuel Price Brake

> The Austrian Parliament has passed a measure to reduce gasoline and diesel prices by up to 12 cents per liter starting October 1, 2026.

The [Austrian National Council](<https://austriareport.com/entity/national-council-austria-q871363>) and Federal Council have approved an extended fuel price brake following a special session. Scheduled to take effect on October 1, the measure aims to reduce gasoline and diesel prices by up to 12 cents per liter for two months.

Finance Minister [Markus Marterbauer](<https://austriareport.com/entity/markus-marterbauer-q15437820>) is authorized to reduce the mineral oil tax by 6.7 cents per liter via ordinance. This reduction, which includes VAT effects, requires the industry to meet price-dampening rules and a margin limit of 3.5 cents per liter.

State Secretary **Barbara Eibinger-Miedl** said the plan offers rapid inflation relief. While the [FPÖ](<https://austriareport.com/entity/freedom-party-of-austria-q131692>) sought deeper tax cuts and CO2 price abolition, the [Green Party](<https://austriareport.com/entity/the-greens-austria-q193178>) criticized the broad subsidy, instead calling for public transport support and profit limits.
