The coalition government is holding a meeting this Sunday to advance a military service reform scheduled for January 1, 2027. Notably, neither the Green party nor the FPÖ were invited to the talks, despite the need for a constitutional majority to pass.
The ÖVP aims to make basic military service more attractive, while the Green party demands higher civil servant salaries. FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl noted his party received only one call. The Ministry of Defense declined to comment on the private negotiations.
An agreement is required by the week after next to meet the 2027 deadline. The law needs a six-week review period before a final vote in December. Securing support from at least one opposition party remains critical for the reform to successfully proceed.
