The Austrian Ministry of Economics announced on September 6, 2026, that costs for the nation's strategic gas reserve will drop to 38.75 million euros annually for the 2027/28 and 2028/29 years. This marks a sharp decline from the current 94 million euros.
Economics Minister attributed the savings to new tender conditions and a specialized storage product. Managed by ASGM, the 20 TWh reserve is spread across multiple sites and now excludes extra injection and withdrawal capacities.
Secured through April 2029, the reserve covers two winter months of emergency demand. While storage facilities are currently 67 percent full, this volume represents 87 percent of Austria's annual gas needs, ensuring energy stability at a lower fiscal cost.
