Austria implemented a ban on headscarves for girls up to 14 years of age in schools this September 2026. The law targets head coverings that conceal the head according to Islamic traditions, with initial reports of violations emerging across several states.
Lower Austria reported up to ten cases, leading to official talks with guardians. Vienna schools recorded approximately 50 violations according to trade union data, while Styria saw two. Repeated offenses now carry fines ranging from 150 to 800 euros.
Uncollectible fines may result in a two-week prison sentence. This measure coincides with new legal innovations, including higher penalties for compulsory schooling violations, support for suspended students, and mandatory perspective talks for families.
