Austria Launches New Police Recruitment Program

The 'Wien auf Zeit' initiative offers police recruits a guaranteed transfer to their home state after five years of service in Vienna.

The Austrian Ministry of the Interior is launching 'Wien auf Zeit,' a new recruiting initiative for police officers. This program guarantees participants a transfer to their home federal state after completing five years of active service within Vienna.

Initial recruitment begins in December 2026, with officers starting in Vienna by December 2028 following a two-year training period. The initiative includes a voluntary two-year extension option, though permanent transfers to Vienna remain a possibility.

With 500 officers currently awaiting transfers out of Vienna, the program aims to reduce this list by ten percent of the new intake. Existing recruitment processes in other federal states will remain unaffected as the ministry addresses staffing needs.
