Austria has recorded its hottest summer in history, leading to a significant decline in autumn crop yields. The extreme heat and prolonged drought have severely impacted the production of grain maize, soy, sugar beets, and potatoes across the entire country.
The Austrian Chamber of Agriculture reports that grain maize tonnage could drop by 30 percent, while soybeans may decrease by over 50 percent. President Josef Moosbrugger noted that potato yields are expected to be between 50 and 70 percent lower than usual.
These losses matter as they affect vital crops like sunflowers and silage maize. In response to the agricultural crisis, the Austrian government has implemented a dedicated drought package and additional support measures to assist the struggling farm sector.
