Austria Reports Rise in Non-German Speaking Pupils

New data shows 32.1 percent of children in Austrian elementary education do not speak German as their first language, peaking in Vienna.

The Statistics Austria Monitoring Report on Elementary Education 2025/2026 reveals that 32.1 percent of children aged three to five in elementary institutions do not speak German as their first language. In Vienna, this figure reaches a high of 60 percent.

Data shows 98.1 percent of five-year-olds and 95 percent of three- to five-year-olds attend these facilities. However, only 3.6 percent of infants under one and 35 percent of one-year-olds are enrolled, while 59.6 percent of all children use VIF-compliant care.

Family Minister Claudia Bauer and Director General Manuela Lenk noted varying regional rates, with Vorarlberg at 28.9 percent and Carinthia at 17.9 percent. These trends impact families where 53.2 percent of mothers work part-time and most fathers work full-time.
