November 2, 2026 at 11:01 AM

> The AMS reports 389,941 people were jobless or in training this October, as rising unemployment in retail and health impacts women most.

The **AMS** reported that 389,941 individuals were unemployed or in training at the end of October 2026, marking a 0.5 percent increase from the previous year. This rise of 1,823 people signifies the 43rd consecutive month of growing unemployment across **Austria**.

AMS board member **Petra Draxl** noted divergent trends as unemployment among women rose by 3.8 percent while decreasing by 2.6 percent for men. Joblessness increased specifically in the retail and health sectors, while industries with more men saw declines.

The persistent upward trend highlights ongoing labor market shifts as certain sectors struggle. While male-dominated industries show recovery, the overall increase driven by the retail and health sectors continues to push national unemployment figures higher.
