Austria to Finalize 2028-2030 University Budget

The Austrian government prepares to set university funding as institutions warn of a one-billion-Euro shortfall and potential staff cuts.

The Austrian government is set to finalize the 2028-2030 public university budget this weekend to meet an end-of-October legal deadline. While the Universities Conference (uniko) requests 18 billion Euro to offset inflation, Science Minister Eva-Maria Holzleitner of the SPÖ warns that such funding is not feasible under current austerity measures.

The uniko, representing 22 institutions, warns that stagnating budgets could lead to a one-billion-Euro shortfall by 2030. President Brigitte Hütter stated that three percent annual inflation without budget increases would necessitate cutting one-tenth of all university staff, severely impacting the national higher education infrastructure.

In response to the looming fiscal constraints, the Austrian Students' Union (ÖH) has organized a protest on the Vienna Ring for this afternoon. Supported by the universities, the demonstration aims to oppose potential budget cuts and advocate for the financial stability required to maintain academic standards and staffing levels across Austria.
