Austria to Overhaul Military Service in 2027

Austria will reform its military service starting in 2027, investing nearly 1 billion euros to boost mobilization to 75,000 personnel.

Austria is set to overhaul its compulsory military service starting January 1, 2027, with total costs projected to reach 984.6 million euros by 2031. The reform introduces a six-month basic service followed by one month of training and 60 militia days.

Annual spending will rise from 17.5 million euros in 2027 to 267.8 million euros by 2031. Key expenses include increasing conscript pay to 1,000 euros and 50 million euros for ammunition. Civilian service may also extend from nine to eleven months by 2029.

The initiative aims to grow the mobilization strength of the Austrian Armed Forces to 75,000 personnel by 2032. Assuming 15,500 annual conscripts, the government will conduct an internal evaluation in 2032 to assess the long-term impact of these changes.
