Austria discards over 3,000 tons of food daily, an amount equivalent to roughly 140 truckloads. According to the WWF, more than 1.2 million tons are wasted annually. The organization released these findings on Monday to highlight the scale of national waste.
Calculations from the Environment Agency Austria and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences show private households generate the most waste. WWF expert Julia Haslinger attributes this to incorrect storage and purchasing beyond actual needs.
The WWF is calling for binding reduction targets across the entire supply chain. To support this, the group demands new tax incentives and clearer liability rules for companies donating food, aiming to decrease the volume of edible items being thrown away.
