Statistik Austria reported on Thursday that six Austrian airports saw a 5.1 percent decline in total passengers to seven million during July and August 2026. Flight movements also dropped by 4.9 percent to 50,511, marking the first summer decline since 2020.
Vienna airport saw a 5.8 percent decrease to 6.3 million travelers, while Linz and Klagenfurt fell by 13.5 and 13 percent respectively. Conversely, Salzburg and Innsbruck grew by 8.9 and 5.6 percent, though Innsbruck remained below pre-pandemic levels.
Director General Manuela Lenk noted that 2026 volumes trailed peaks from 2025, 2024, and 2019. The downturn, which began in April, is attributed to the war in Iran, which disrupted flight routes and increased kerosene prices, impacting freight and airmail.
