# Austrian Farmers Adapt to Rising Climate Risks

Experts from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (**BOKU**) report that global warming is increasing the frequency of heat and drought periods in Austria. The COMMUNITYadapt project found that 80 percent of local farms expect impacts.

Data shows 40 percent of Austrian agricultural businesses view climate change as an existential threat. Consequently, farmers are experimenting with humus building and the cultivation of dry rice, chickpeas, and olives to adapt to the shifting environment.

While the EU targets climate neutrality by 2050, Austria aims for 2040 with a roadmap due in 2027. BOKU experts like Johannes Tintner-Olifier and Marianne Penker note that cultivation areas for staples like wheat, sugar beet, and corn will inevitably change.
