Grandparents in provide 202 million hours of childcare annually for 358,000 children under twelve. An analysis by the (ÖGB) released for the 'Month of the Older Generation' shows they average ten hours of care per week.
Data reveals 65.4 percent of these hours occur between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM. While the ÖGB cannot distinguish between grandmothers and grandfathers, Monika Kemperle, chairwoman of the ÖGB pensioners, noted the significant reliance on time-use data for findings.
Replacing this labor with paid childcare would cost 3.63 billion euros annually. Without it, parents would lose 2.87 billion euros in gross income due to a 132 million hour reduction in working time, highlighting the massive economic impact of this support.
