# Austrian Grandparents Provide Billions in Care

Grandparents in **Austria** provide 202 million hours of childcare annually for 358,000 children under twelve. An analysis by the **Austrian Trade Union Federation** (ÖGB) released for the 'Month of the Older Generation' shows they average ten hours of care per week.

Data reveals 65.4 percent of these hours occur between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM. While the ÖGB cannot distinguish between grandmothers and grandfathers, **Monika Kemperle**, chairwoman of the ÖGB pensioners, noted the significant reliance on time-use data for findings.

Replacing this labor with paid childcare would cost 3.63 billion euros annually. Without it, parents would lose 2.87 billion euros in gross income due to a 132 million hour reduction in working time, highlighting the massive economic impact of this support.
