Austrian Leaders to Finalize University Budget

Chancellor Stocker and Vice-Chancellor Babler meet Saturday to bridge the 2.5 billion euro gap in Austria's three-year university funding.

Federal Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor will meet with government leaders on Saturday, October 17, 2026, to finalize the three-year university budget. The Austrian government must reach a definitive agreement by the end of October.

The Universities Conference and the Austrian Students' Union are demanding 18 billion euros, while the Federal Financial Framework Act currently allocates 15.5 billion. Science Minister also plans to introduce a new part-time study model.

Finance Minister faces pressure as Social Minister proposes taxing top earners to fund social spending. This includes the 'Zukunftsdepot,' a 2027 initiative providing a 500-euro state birth grant and tax-free savings.
