A recent survey of 119 train attendants by the Austrian Trade Union Federation and vida Tirol reveals a troubling workplace environment. One-fifth of respondents plan to leave the profession within five years, while one-third report frequent high-stress shifts.
Data shows 87 percent of attendants cite passengers as their primary stressor, with 89 percent reporting insults and 69 percent facing threats. Furthermore, one-third have been physically attacked, and 74 percent find handling these conflicts alone stressful.
To address these safety concerns, vida Tirol is demanding a 10-point national plan including double staffing and body cams. The ÖGB also aims to expand follow-up care services and implement a uniform reporting system to protect workers on high-load routes.
