EU Ministers Approve New Deportation Law

EU interior ministers passed a regulation to streamline returns of illegal migrants, including the use of third-country return hubs.

EU interior ministers approved a new deportation law in Luxembourg on October 1, 2026, to streamline the return of third-country nationals staying illegally. Presented a year ago by Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner, the law aims for faster efficiency.

The regulation, previously passed by the EU Parliament, allows for return hubs in third countries for individuals with active return decisions. These agreements require partner nations to respect international human rights standards and legal principles.

While human rights groups expressed concerns, no specific countries were named after the meeting. However, Uganda, Rwanda, and Kazakhstan are currently being discussed as potential locations for these external hubs to manage illegal migration into the EU.
