# EU Plans to Transform Frontex into Return Agency

EU Migration Commissioner **Magnus Brunner** announced a legislative proposal to transform **Frontex** into a central deportation agency. Reported by **Welt am Sonntag**, the plan expands the agency's role beyond border protection to manage returns across the **European Union**.

The initiative follows a deportation law effective October 2026, which established mutual recognition of return decisions. While the return rate rose from 20 to 30 percent, a new coordination center is planned to further streamline these European operations.

To fund this expansion, the EU Commission proposed doubling Frontex's budget to 24 billion euros. However, the **Irish Council Presidency** recently suggested halving that amount in a negotiation document, creating a significant funding gap for the new agency.
