# Expanded Fuel Price Brake Takes Effect in Austria

An expanded fuel price brake took effect on October 1, 2026, to lower costs for drivers. The measure reduces the mineral oil tax by 6.7 cents per liter and caps industry margins by 3.5 cents. Including VAT, prices should drop by roughly twelve cents per liter.

[E-Control](<https://austriareport.com/entity/e-control-q1273113>) will monitor the margin limits and is authorized to request data from companies. State Secretary **Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig** noted that failing to pass on tax cuts is a minor offense. Inadmissible gains may be declared forfeited by the government.

On September 30, median diesel prices hit 2.252 euros per liter, while Super gasoline reached 1.944 euros. [Carinthia](<https://austriareport.com/entity/carinthia-q37985>) saw the lowest rates, whereas [Tyrol](<https://austriareport.com/entity/tyrol-state-q42880>) and [Vorarlberg](<https://austriareport.com/entity/vorarlberg-q38981>) recorded the highest. E-Control will continue to publish daily median price updates online.
