# Greens Call Special Session Over Climate Law

> Following a record-breaking summer, the Green Party is demanding binding climate targets and a roadmap for key sectors by late 2027.

The Green Party, led by **Leonore Gewessler**, has requested a special session of parliament regarding climate protection on Monday, September 14, 2026. This follows the hottest summer on record, which saw 646 heat-related deaths during June and July alone.

The Green Party is demanding a climate law with binding targets, including a roadmap due by late 2027. The proposal focuses on transport, buildings, and agriculture, while seeking a water extraction register, soil protection, and cooling for schools.

Failure to meet EU emission targets would force Austria to purchase allocations from other states. While the ÖVP, SPÖ, and NEOS government aims for 2040 climate neutrality, economist Karl Steiniger notes Austria accounts for 0.17% of global emissions.
