# Linz Legionella Outbreak: 32 Cases and 3 Deaths

The number of illness cases linked to a **Legionella** outbreak in the greater **Linz** area has risen to 32, with three confirmed deaths. As of Saturday, August 29, 2026, five patients remain in inpatient treatment while health authorities continue investigations.

A joint statement from **Upper Austria** and AGES confirms that a commercial cooling system in the Linz-Leonding area tested positive for the bacteria on August 27. The system was immediately shut down and disinfected, with 200 additional water samples taken.

**Legionnaires' disease** is a form of pneumonia caused by inhaling contaminated aerosols. While the bacteria occur naturally, older individuals, smokers, and those with pre-existing conditions like diabetes or lung disease face a significantly higher risk.
