October 21, 2026 at 04:47 PM

> Organizers expect 20,000 people to protest government budget cuts this Thursday, causing major traffic disruptions across central Vienna.

A major demonstration against government austerity is scheduled for Thursday, October 22, 2026, in **Vienna**, with organizers expecting up to 20,000 participants. The protest route begins at **Resselpark** and concludes with a final rally at the **University of Vienna**.

The Austrian federal government plans significant budget cuts to social assistance and university funding. **MedUni** Rector Müller warned these reductions will negatively impact patient care at the AKH, prompting widespread public opposition to the measures.

The **ÖAMTC** warns of severe traffic disruptions starting at 4:00 PM across the city center, including the Ring and Franz-Josefs-Kai. Commuters are urged to use subways, as alternative routes like the Gürtel and A23 are expected to be heavily overloaded.
