NEOS Proposes Pay Cuts for Budget Target Failures

The NEOS party passed a motion in Linz to reduce government salaries by 25 percent if specific fiscal budget targets are not achieved.

The NEOS party convened a members' assembly in Linz this Saturday, focusing on systemic savings and structural reforms. During the event, members passed a lead motion to link the salaries of government officials directly to the achievement of budget targets.

Under this proposal, government members would lose 25 percent of their salary if budget targets are missed. This penalty applies unless the debt ratio remains stable or an EU-agreed restructuring path is met, with verification by the Fiscal Council or Budget Service.

General Secretary Douglas Hoyos stated that performance and responsibility must be linked in politics. The plan aims to prevent expensive election gifts and includes a reform dividend where surplus funds are split between debt reduction and public relief measures.
