OECD Expert Warns of Austrian Education Crisis

Director Andreas Schleicher highlights rising teacher exits and the need for early intervention to replace grade repetition in Austria.

OECD Director Andreas Schleicher discussed the 2026 annual study on ZIB 2 this Tuesday, highlighting critical challenges in Austria's education system. Data shows nearly one in ten young teachers are leaving the profession as student grade repetition rises.

Schleicher noted that Austrian youth struggle with text evaluation due to digital platforms providing ready-made answers. While childcare for three- and four-year-olds has improved, the nation lags in support for children under three compared to the OECD.

To address these deficits, Schleicher advocates for early intervention over grade repetition, citing Great Britain's model of specialized language support. Targeted funding and trained specialists are deemed more cost-effective than current Austrian practices.
