Statistik Austria released a survey on September 15, 2026, revealing that 37 percent of respondents encountered online hate in the previous three months. This marks an increase from 31 percent in 2023, based on data collected from 5,550 individuals in 2025.
The report shows 31 percent of hate posts targeted political or social views, while 26 percent focused on religion. Other attacks involved ethnic origin at 25 percent, sexual orientation at 24 percent, gender at 20 percent, and impairments at 17 percent.
Austria's 37 percent rate sits below the EU-27 average of 40 percent. While Ireland saw the highest perception at 66 percent, Greece recorded the lowest at 26 percent. The EU-wide perception of online hate rose from 34 to 40 percent between 2023 and 2025.
