# ÖVP Proposes Major Reform of Austrian Broadcaster ORF

September 8, 2026 at 10:11 AM

> The Austrian People's Party has unveiled a plan to overhaul ORF's funding, leadership structure, and content mandate to focus on culture.

The **Austrian People's Party**, led by Media Spokesperson Markus Gstöttner, has released a position paper proposing a major reform of the **ORF**. The plan suggests replacing the current household levy with a budget-financed model or a significantly reduced fee.

The proposal seeks to narrow the ORF mandate to focus on education, culture, and objectivity while removing US series and trash content. It also suggests replacing the Director General with a three-member board and restructuring the 35-member Board of Trustees.

These changes aim to ensure constitutional compliance and increase cooperation with other Austrian media outlets. As the debate intensifies, SPÖ Vice-Chancellor Andreas Babler has convened an ORF Future Forum for the week of September 8, 2026, to discuss.
