Ryanair to Cut Vienna Base and Twelve Routes

Ryanair will withdraw four aircraft and cut 80 jobs in Vienna this winter, citing high airport fees and rising air traffic control costs.

Ryanair confirmed on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, that it will cut its Austrian winter flight schedule. The airline is withdrawing four aircraft stationed in Vienna and discontinuing twelve routes. This strategic reduction will impact 80 jobs at the carrier.

CEO Michael O'Leary cited high costs as the primary driver, noting a 60 percent rise in air traffic control fees since the pandemic and a 30 percent hike at Vienna Airport. O'Leary is calling for the abolition of the 12 euro national air traffic tax to help.

The airline predicts a decrease of three million passengers in Vienna for 2026. Despite a 30 million euro aviation aid package announced in June by Chancellor Christian Stocker, Ryanair warns that current fee structures are unsustainable for its operations.
