# Seven Austrian Schools to Close or Merge by 2026

August 25, 2026 at 11:35 AM

> Seven school sites across Upper Austria, Styria, and Salzburg will close or merge by the 2026/27 school year to streamline operations.

Seven school locations across **Upper Austria**, **Styria**, and **Salzburg** are set to close or merge for the 2026/27 school year. In Styria, municipalities applied to close Mittelschule Weiz I, Volksschule Modriach, and Volksschule Bärnbach-Afling to streamline operations.

Upper Austria will close three Innviertel schools previously serving 124 students, while Salzburg shuts down the Polytechnische Schule in Neumarkt. Additionally, school clusters are expanding in Styria, Burgenland, Carinthia, and Lower Austria this year.

These changes follow Statistics Austria data showing 45 schools with ten or fewer students. While Tyrol and Vorarlberg report no new clusters, Salzburg is merging HAK I and II, reflecting a broader national trend of consolidating smaller educational sites.
