Strong Solar Storm Triggers Northern Lights

A powerful solar storm reaches Earth, bringing visible northern lights to Germany and potential viewing opportunities for parts of Austria.

A strong solar storm has officially reached Earth, as confirmed by UBIMET meteorologist Nikolas Zimmermann on the platform X. The event has already triggered visible northern lights in parts of Germany, including Sauerland and Bavaria's Berghaus Sonnenfels.

While clouds currently cover most of Austria, conditions may improve in the west and southwest. Residents in Vorarlberg, Tyrol, and Carinthia have the best chance to see the aurora. No major technical damage has been confirmed from this current solar storm.

Solar storms can disrupt satellites, power grids, and navigation. A study in the journal Nature suggests geomagnetic reactions to extreme solar winds may be twice as strong as previously assumed, potentially underestimating the risk to global infrastructure.
