Linguist Katharina Korecky-Kröll of the Austrian Academy of Sciences analyzed greeting formulas across 13 rural locations in eight Austrian states. Published in the journal Languages, the study of 152 people found 'Hallo' used in 65 percent of greetings.
The research identified regional shifts, noting 'Du' is more common in the west than the east. While 'Servus' appeared in under ten percent of cases, 'Grüß Gott' was the top choice in formal settings, though it only occurred in 4.6 percent of spontaneous acts.
Age plays a significant role in social interactions, as younger participants greeted more often while older individuals discussed the topic more. In Vorarlberg and Tyrol, specific local terms like 'Heil' persist but are often code-switched for outsiders.
