A study by the Institute for Advanced Studies for the Austrian Integration Fund reveals significant disparities among Neets—youth not in education, employment, or training. In 2021, 27.3% of foreign-born young adults in Austria held this status.
Author Hermann Kuschej and Cornelia Marks of the ÖIF note that 61% of Neets remained outside the system two years later. Notably, 75% of first-generation migrant women stayed Neets, while 44% of those without a migration background returned to the system.
The data highlights specific demographic challenges, showing 33.2% of young Turkish women and 21.5% of Turkish men as Neets. While gender gaps were smaller among Syrian and Afghan youth, the findings underscore long-term integration hurdles for many groups.
