# Upper Austria Social Assistance Cases Drop by 5%

August 30, 2026 at 10:18 AM

> Beneficiary numbers fell following the launch of a new model that ties social assistance payments to integration and language measures.

**Upper Austria** reports a decline in social assistance recipients following the February 1 launch of a new model. Total recipients dropped 5% to 7,279, while employable recipients fell 7.7% to 2,693. One in 258 residents there now receives these benefits.

The model pays 50% of benefits initially, with increases tied to integration and language measures. Failure to seek work or learn German triggers cuts of 30% to 50%, or total cancellation. In 2026, 288 cases saw reductions due to lack of labor cooperation.

Governor Thomas Stelzer is urging Social Minister Korinna Schumann to accelerate national harmonization. While Vienna sees one in 14 residents on assistance, the national average is one in 45. The Social Ministry expects reform results by this January.
