Vienna Begins Major Ringstraße Redesign Project

Construction has started on a new two-way bicycle path along Vienna's Schottenring, marking the first phase of a city-wide ring redesign.

The redesign of the Vienna Ringstraße officially began on Monday, October 5, 2026. This project involves converting side lanes into a 4.50-meter-wide, two-way bicycle path. The first phase covers 700 meters on the Schottenring between Schottentor and the Kai.

City Councilor Ulli Sima and NEOS leader Selma Arapovic noted the path features sand-yellow asphalt, referencing historical gravel alleys. While side lanes close to motor vehicles, main roadway lanes remain unchanged, and hotel access areas will be maintained.

The first section costs 5.7 million euros and finishes by summer 2027. Future phases will cover the Universitätsring, Opernring, and Kärntner Ring. The entire project aims to separate cyclists from pedestrians and is set for completion by the end of 2030.
