Vienna Council Calls for Ban on Smartglasses

Vienna's governing parties urge the Austrian government to regulate camera-equipped eyewear and seek uniform EU-wide privacy standards.

The introduced a resolution on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, calling on the Austrian federal government to examine a ban on smartglasses. The and governing parties seek a legal framework for camera-equipped devices in public spaces.

The proposal demands that Austria advocate for uniform EU-wide privacy regulations. SPÖ Councilor Alexander Ackerl noted that strict rules already exist for video surveillance, arguing that tech firms lack the legitimacy to set their own privacy standards.

Neos Councilor Stefan Gara specifically advocated for a ban in schools so students and teachers are not filmed unnoticed. The resolution suggests requiring user consent before recording, rather than forcing victims to prove they were filmed without permission.
