# Vienna Council Calls for Ban on Smartglasses October 21, 2026 at 01:47 PM > Vienna's governing parties urge the Austrian government to regulate camera-equipped eyewear and seek uniform EU-wide privacy standards. The **Vienna City Council** introduced a resolution on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, calling on the Austrian federal government to examine a ban on smartglasses. The **SPÖ** and **Neos** governing parties seek a legal framework for camera-equipped devices in public spaces. The proposal demands that Austria advocate for uniform EU-wide privacy regulations. SPÖ Councilor **Alexander Ackerl** noted that strict rules already exist for video surveillance, arguing that tech firms lack the legitimacy to set their own privacy standards. Neos Councilor **Stefan Gara** specifically advocated for a ban in schools so students and teachers are not filmed unnoticed. The resolution suggests requiring user consent before recording, rather than forcing victims to prove they were filmed without permission.
