Vienna General Hospital Faces 200 Doctor Cuts

The Medical University of Vienna warns that proposed budget reductions could lead to the loss of 200 full-time medical positions at AKH.

The Medical University of Vienna and the Vienna Chamber of Physicians warn that the Vienna General Hospital (AKH) faces a potential loss of 200 full-time medical positions. These cuts stem from proposed budget reductions for public universities through 2030.

A budget of 15.5 billion Euro is under discussion for 2028-2030, down from the current 16.5 billion. The University Conference requested 18 billion to offset inflation. The Medical University provides all 1,700 doctors for the world's 20th-ranked hospital.

With 85 percent of the university's budget tied to medical staff, Rector Markus Müller and Chamber President Johannes Steinhart warn of severe impacts. Officials now call for a summit between the Ministry of Science, the city, and medical representatives.
