Vienna Investigates Fatal House Collapse

Prosecutors launch a probe into four suspects for negligent endangerment following a fatal building collapse during attic renovations.

The Vienna Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into four suspects following a fatal house collapse on Färbergasse in the city center. Authorities are looking into negligent public endangerment involving individuals or companies.

The incident resulted in the death of an 85-year-old woman, whose body was recovered by the Vienna Professional Fire Brigade. A 57-year-old woman was seriously injured, while two others sustained minor injuries. Emergency housing has been organized for all.

Prior to the collapse, an approved attic extension began on August 31. While debris removal is prohibited, engineers are now developing a safety concept. Some residents were briefly allowed back inside to retrieve personal belongings from the site.
