Vienna Rental Scooter Fines Hit 600,000 Euros

Vienna reports 33,000 rental scooter penalty cases in 2023 following new sidewalk parking regulations and stricter enforcement zones.

Vienna saw an explosive increase in rental scooter penalty proceedings in 2023, totaling approximately 33,000 cases. This surge generated over 600,000 euros in revenue. In contrast, the first half of the year saw only three cases, which were all discontinued.

A new regulation effective July 2023 transformed enforcement by banning parking on sidewalks narrower than four meters and outside designated zones. Providers must now ensure immediate removal of illegal vehicles. Most complaints involve scooters on sidewalks.

The Vienna City Court of Audit reports that monitoring intensity remained steady despite the 2023 spike. However, proceedings dropped to 17,000 in 2024, with only 3,400 projected for the current year, suggesting the stricter parking rules are now effective.
