Vienna Rescue Services Face Critical Funding Gap

Unions warn of a funding crisis for Vienna's rescue services as negotiations with the Austrian Health Insurance Fund reach a stalemate.

Trade unions Younion and vida are warning of a critical funding gap for rescue and patient transport services in Vienna. Negotiations between rescue organizations and the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) have stalled after months of ongoing discussions.

The ÖGK offered a 1.5 percent remuneration increase for 2026, despite inflation exceeding three percent. Currently, tax money and donations cover the deficit. Bernhard Stoik of Younion is calling for an improved offer to sustain these essential services.

The ÖGK claims states are responsible for rescue financing, noting Vienna only funds its professional service. While ÖGK transport spending in Vienna is 60 percent above the national average, unions argue the current reimbursement model remains insufficient.
