# Vienna Upgrades Danube Island Pumping Station

**Vienna** has completed an 18-million-euro modernization of the **Danube Island** pumping station, increasing its maximum capacity from 45,000 to 60,000 liters per second. The 22-month project added a high-performance pump capable of moving 15,000 liters per second.

The facility serves as the control center for Vienna's 2,500-kilometer sewer network, managing wastewater for two million people. Modernization included technical renovations, fiber optic upgrades, and new cybersecurity measures for its 700 measuring points.

Climate City Councilor **Jürgen Czernohorszky** noted the station now houses **Europe**'s most powerful rainwater pump of its design. Future plans include a 100-million-liter underground storage basin and a second wastewater pipe to the **Simmering** treatment plant.
