Austria Proposes Ban on Political Islam

Minister Claudia Bauer unveils a 24-point legislative package to increase state oversight of Islamic religious education in Austria.

Austria's European and Integration Minister Claudia Bauer, representing the ÖVP, has finalized a 24-point document aimed at banning political Islam. The legislative package, currently under coalition review, is based on the official government program.

The proposal introduces stricter state supervision for Islamic religious education, which is currently governed by the Islam Act. Bauer is demanding specific qualifications for teachers and standardized materials for the estimated 750,000 Muslims in Austria.

Bauer emphasized that Islamic religious education is domestic law subject to legislative change. This move impacts the IGGÖ, as many resident Muslims are not members, despite teachers currently paying a solidarity contribution to the religious community.
