Austria's Unemployment Rises to 381,200 in September

The Austrian Social Ministry reports a 1.6 percent year-on-year increase in joblessness, with long-term unemployment surging by 11 percent.

The Austrian Social Ministry reported on Thursday, October 1, 2026, that the number of unemployed individuals and AMS training participants rose to 381,200 in September. This represents an increase of 6,000 people, or 1.6 percent, compared to the previous year.

Unemployment among women rose by six percent, while male unemployment fell by 0.6 percent. Nationwide youth unemployment dropped by 1.5 percent, yet the number of apprentices seeking work grew by eight percent, leaving a gap of 3,977 vacant apprenticeship spots.

Long-term unemployment surged by 11 percent to 104,101 people, now accounting for 34 percent of all registered cases. While joblessness among foreigners remained stable, it rose by 4.3 percent for Austrians and increased in all federal states except Vienna.
