Austrian National Day Triggers Retail Closures

Major grocery chains Hofer and Lidl will close for two days as Austria celebrates National Day, while select hub locations remain open.

National Day falls on Monday, October 26, leading to widespread retail closures across the country. Major grocery chains and have confirmed all locations will remain shut on both Sunday, October 25, and the Monday national holiday.

Travelers can still access essentials as specific locations at high-traffic hubs like Vienna Westbahnhof and Klagenfurt Hauptbahnhof remain open. Selected Spar stores and Billa gas station shops will also operate during the two-day holiday period.

The closures come amid a political debate over retail hours. CEO Marcel Haraszti is seeking an increase to 78 weekly hours, while officials like Josef Schellhorn and Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer propose flexibility for smaller, unstaffed shops.
