The Linz Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into unknown perpetrators following a Legionella outbreak in Upper Austria. Authorities confirmed the probe on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, citing suspicions of negligent homicide after three people died.
A total of 32 individuals in the provincial capital and surrounding areas fell ill during the outbreak. Health officials identified a cooling system owned by Linz AG as a potential source after the same bacterial strain was found in both a patient and the facility.
The facility has since been disinfected and switched to dry operation to prevent further bacterial growth. While a bereaved relative filed a criminal complaint, police are currently executing an investigation order to determine liability for the fatal infections.
