NEOS Motion to Cut Vienna Council Salaries Fails

The NEOS party's proposal to reform non-executive city councilor roles in Vienna was rejected by both the OVP and SPO coalition partners.

The NEOS party has submitted a formal motion at the coalition level to address the status of non-executive city councilors in Vienna. These officials, who do not lead departments or business areas, currently receive a gross monthly salary of 11,328.40 euros.

The Freedom Party holds three of these positions, while the Greens have two and the People's Party has one. Seats are guaranteed by the Federal Constitution's proportional representation system, and a two-thirds National Council majority is needed for reform.

NEOS General Secretary Douglas Hoyos saw the motion rejected by both the Austrian People's Party and the Social Democratic Party. This legislative stalemate ensures the continuation of the current senate structure despite calls for structural government change.
