Langenscheidt Verlag has officially named Ragebait as the Youth Word of the Year 2026 at the Frankfurt Book Fair. The term, which describes online content designed to provoke anger, secured 36.5 percent of the vote to beat out Peak and the term Crashout.
The winning word refers to social media posts on platforms like TikTok and X intended to trigger outrage and engagement. While Peak took 34 percent and Crashout earned 30 percent, the publisher did not disclose the total number of votes cast this year.
Ragebait follows previous winners Das crazy and Aura as the top linguistic trend. Meanwhile, the search for Austria's Youth Word continues until December 3, with public suggestions currently being accepted at oewort.at through the start of November.
