Austrian Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker and five other heads of government have sent a formal letter to the Irish EU Council Presidency regarding financial negotiations. The group includes leaders from Germany, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands, and Denmark.
The signatories, all representing net contributor nations, rejected the EU Commission's proposed 60 percent nominal budget increase for the 2028 Multiannual Financial Framework. They described the current approach as economically and politically unrealistic.
The letter requests that the Irish Presidency present a new proposal reduced by several hundred billion euros for the October EU summit. The six nations aim to prevent a budget reduction compared to the current MFF while ensuring a sustainable fiscal future.
