Tanner Pushes for Earlier Civilian Service Reform

Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner seeks to accelerate the extension of alternative civilian service amid ongoing coalition negotiations.

Defense Minister of the party called for an earlier extension of alternative civilian service during an interview on October 18, 2026. Current plans schedule the shift from nine to eleven months for 2029 if military numbers drop.

The reform requires a two-thirds majority, prompting ongoing discussions between the ÖVP, SPÖ, and NEOS. While the Green Party seeks higher pay for participants, the FPÖ opposes delays. Plans also include extending basic military service to nine months total.

Secured funding supports the military reform, while a working group addresses the 2035 retirement. The aims to acquire 36 new jets, with a financing path and aircraft type decision expected by the end of the 2026 period.
